A healthcare power of attorney grants another the right to medical decisions on your behalf if you are unable to communicate your desires.  Your agent will communicate with your health care provider to determine what course of action they will take regarding your medical care.  It is important to name someone you are comfortable making such decisions on your behalf and those persons may be different from those persons who you appoint to administer your financial affairs.

A living will is a declaration of your desire that medical treatment and other life support measures be withheld if you are in a permanent vegetative state or have an incurable disease or illness.  The instrument may also authorize your caretakers to withhold food and fluids.  This document may also be drafted to instruct your health care providers to take all action necessary to keep you alive.  This instrument is optional and obviously, a very personal decision.
